Investing in yourself

You have heard or probably even said “getting healthy is expensive” I know I have many times over the years. I want to ask you a question, will money, family, work or your passions in life matter if you are unhealthy? Looking back on my life there was a time where I couldn’t walk up stairs without being winded. Where I couldn’t tie my shoes without losing my breath because my stomach was to the size where it was very uncomfortable to even bend like that. Where crossing my legs left a dark red mark on my lower leg for hours. I don’t want to imagine where I would have been if I had keep going like I was.

So how expensive is health? It can cause you to lose everything in life. It can mean you are permanently sidelined from the life you want to life. It means that you decline invitations to do things because of your weight or fitness level. What’s the price tag on that? I’d say that price tag is too high, I know, because have paid it.

Getting healthy can cost you time, money, among other things but I don’t know of anyone who’s been unhealthy and gotten to their goals who said “I wish I hadn’t gotten healthy”, I think I’ve only heard how it wasn’t worth it from those who didn’t follow through. Maybe you’re guilty of being a debby downer about how much getting healthy costs. That’s okay, this is a safe place, no judgement here, goodness knows I’ve done that or worse.

Once you get over the stigma of getting healthy costing a lot and remind yourself that it is an investment that pays dividends you can free yourself to get wise with how you spend your money, time and effort to better yourself. Let me tell you about how I’ve invested in myself.

I got a health DNA test (turns out I’m 100%….jk) that unlocked a lot of information I didn’t know and helps me stop guessing what works for my body, I posted about this here: https://keepfallingforward.com/?p=462

I got an arguably expensive gym membership (who else goes to Orange Theory Fitness?)

When I wanted to try Paleo the first time or I was focusing on getting my workout habit established I let someone else prep my food with a pre packaged food service

I bought and listened to or read books on the subject I was struggling with

I’ve bought fitness coaching programs

I’ve signed up for health and fitness training

I take customized vitamins and use supplements

I’ve done dietbets and healthy wages to BET on my weight loss success

Investing in yourself can look so different for everyone but we spend so much money on things that won’t make a big impact on our lives. I promise that for most people there are places where you can adjust your money to make room for a number of these things to be easily added. It’s about what is most important. We make room for things that are important in our life. We make time and will spend a lot of money to make sure the things we want and need are done so why should our health be any different?
